Mount Kailash Overview
Mount Kailash is a revered peak located in the Ngari Prefecture, Tibet Autonomous Region of China. Positioned in the Kailash Range (Gangdisê Mountains) of the Transhimalaya, it stands in the western part of the Tibetan Plateau. The mountain reaches an elevation of 6,638 meters (21,778 feet) and lies north of the trijunction where the borders of China, India, and Nepal meet.
Sacred Significance
Mount Kailash is of immense religious significance to multiple faiths, including:
- Hinduism
- Buddhism
- Jainism
- Bon Religion
The region surrounding Mount Kailash is also home to Lake Manasarovar and Lake Rakshastal, two important bodies of water. Additionally, it is the source of four major rivers: the Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and Karnali.
Pilgrimage and Cultural Importance
Each year, thousands of pilgrims from India, China, Nepal, and other countries travel to Mount Kailash. Their spiritual journey often includes trekking towards Lake Mansarovar, followed by a sacred circumambulation (known as Kora) around the mountain itself.
Climbing Restrictions
Though Mount Kailash has been surveyed by climbers, there has never been a recorded successful ascent. The Chinese government has imposed a ban on climbing the mountain due to its profound religious significance for various traditions.
